Medina County
There are approximately 169,000 people living in Medina County and 27, 449 are age 60 and over according to the 2006 American Community Survey.  Five percent of the population is age 75 or older.  The county saw an increase of 32% in seniors over the age of sixty according to the 2000 U.S. Census.  This was the largest increase in Northeast Ohio among seven counties.  Each month 12,000 Ohioans turn 60, which will result in a 33.2% growth in that age cohort from 2007-2020.  Our fastest growing segment of the population is those 85 and older, with an estimated 1 million Ohioans turning 85 by 2050 compared to 217,462 in 2005.  We also know a number of things about our aging population; they have fewer acute health conditions, but have more chronic ones, they are wealthier, but more in debt than previous generations and half of those 85 and older suffer from some form of dementia and 16.5 of the 60-69 age group have one or more disabilities and 51.6% of those ages 80 and over have one or more seriously disabling conditions.  This population growth has serious implications in the need for services and resources for older adults.

The HANDS Foundation in collaboration with Medina County Family First Council and Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority funded the 2008 Senior Needs Assessment Survey"  to determine the issues impacting Medina County seniors.   Dr. Jackie Kirby-Wilkins authored and conducted the needs assessment survey.  The links to the 2008 Senior Needs Assessment Survey Executive Summary and Final Report are below.
